These Theoretical Sketches. Translating, Exhibiting, Critiquing Design retrace a research project that began in 2019. Starting from a need to structure a field that is contested by several scientific disciplines, when it is not crumbled between rival theorisations, it was a question of entering through three doors, three gaps that seemed to be rich with possibilities for structuring. Indeed, the translation of the fundamentals of design remains to be perfected; an exhibition specific to design remains to be defined; design criticism is less recognised and less prominent than art criticism. And yet, translatology, expology and critical theory appear as potential paradigms for design. Like any research programme, it has given rise to its share of thematic dossiers in journals and articles, but more specifically, it has resulted in an anthology and the creation of tools open to all actors in the field, namely the journal Design, Arts, Médias and Design in Translation, a website dedicated to the fundamentals of design. The present book, the result of a retrospective look at research work and its productions, endeavours to retrace the path taken towards a critical theory of design that now appears on the horizon.
